El Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS, siglas en inglés) reportó este martes un sismo de magnitud 5.9 en la escala de Richter suscitado en el sudeste de Australia.
De acuerdo a las autoridades, el terremoto tuvo una profundidad de diez kilómetros, el epicentro estuvo ubicado a 128 kilómetros al este de Melbourne, capital estatal de Victoria, pueblo con más de 4 millones de personas.
Los dirigentes estatales australianos establecieron el Centro de Control del Estado con el propósito de hacer frente al desastre natural.
Por su parte, el comisionado del Departamento de Policía, Rick Nugent, afirmó a medios locales que al principio se sintió un fuerte estruendo que lo hizo pensar en la posibilidad de un ataque terrorista con bomba.
Las autoridades australianas dijeron que hasta el momento no se han reportado víctimas mortales ni heridos. Tampoco hay amenaza de tsunami por el momento.
A pesar de no lamentar fallecimientos o lesionados, varios inmuebles sufrieron daños, la mayor destrucción fue registrada en Chapel Street, carretera que recorre los suburbios australianos de South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, St Kilda y St Kilda East.
